What better way to celebrate summer than hitting the beach and catching a wave? If you haven't yet this season, now's your chance: Today's International Surfing Day.
While we fully support marking the occasion with a viewing of the classic beach-hunk fest Point Break (Keanu + Swayze + surfboards = cowabunga!), there's a better way to take part: Hanging ten yourself.
If you've never been on a board and are totally intimidated about where to start, no worries. We tapped Lakey Peterson, the number-four-ranked female surfer in the world, for advice. "Surfing is a sport that you have to fully embrace," she says. No clue how? Head to worldsurfleague.com to get some seriously bodacious inspo to get your feet wet in the sport. Then take this California girl's three top tips and go get your Gidget on.
1. Get in gear: "If you're going surfing for the first time, I recommend getting a board that's a little bit longer (it'll be about a foot or foot and a half taller than you) and that's made of thick foam. The larger size will help make it really stable and easy to ride. If you're heading into cold water, invest in (or rent) a wetsuit. Also necessary: surf wax, to keep you from slipping off the wet board."
2. Do some prep work: "To get ready for the motion of pushing up and hopping onto the board, try burpees. I always incorporate these into my workouts, for sure. They mimic the motion of jumping up on your board and are a great way to get your body warm and ready."
3. Wait for it: "Walk out into the water until about where you are waist deep, then jump on the board and start paddling to the lineup. Then just wait for the right wave. It takes a little bit of time to learn what waves are good ones and what waves are bad. Look for one that's breaking in one direction, not folding over in different sections—you won't be able to ride it very long if that's the case."
